Patients Take Control of Medical Records

As medical sophistication grows the amount of medical information grows with it. Increasingly patients find they need to control their medical information or it can be lost between multiple doctors and hospitals.

How can an emergency room doctor gain access to your latest test results? One New York company is offering a solution. Verbaprompt LLC is offering a service to maintain your medical records in an offline computer and provide hard copy to emergency room personnel and doctors. "Participants are provided with identification notifying doctors to call our toll-free line. We are able to translate the information into over 140 languages to accommodate travel to foreign countries," says Ann Baechel, President and Founder.

Verbaprompt LLC was in 1999 and started offering its Travel Med service in April 2001. Verbaprompt was founded to increase medication compliance and reduce medication errors. "I saw a need for a medication reminder service that treated the whole patient," says Ms. Baechel. Medicinal non-compliance costs our healthcare system millions in illness, doctor's visits, lost work time and medical support. Verbaprompt is a service that provides frequent re-education about medical conditions (as many times a day as necessary). This re-education comes in the form of a phone call timed with the person's medical and/or behavioral needs. The message is psychologically programmed to provide the most effective message for each individual. "Our goal is to ensure that patients take their medications correctly and on time, reducing their complications and their need for additional medical attention," Ms. Baechel. This system has proven to provide a net cost savings preventing hospitalizations and controlling chronic diseases.

When needed or requested Verbaprompt's Clinical Advisory Board reviews individual plans. The Verbaprompt system can deliver the message to home phones, cell phones and pagers to support independence and improve quality of life. Messages can also be delivered via TTY. Verbaprompt prefers to be thought of as a medical tool, rather than a reminder service, because they are able to ask questions and receive numeric responses.

Verbaprompt is powered by the technology that has been providing emergency notification services for over 20 years with two redundant sites, one in Albany New York and the second in Nevada to ensure delivery of service. These sites are staffed 24/7 and all reports are reviewed by Verbaprompt staff. The database is maintained off line and is completely secure. The calls are monitored for irregularities and the customer or family is contacted at a predetermined threshold.

The reduction of medication errors and medical miscommunication can save both patients and insurers money. More importantly, Verbaprompt is harnessing new technology to improve the quality of life for patients around the world.
